How to Care for Your Fresh Sourdough Starter

Keeping Your Wild Yeast Happy and Thriving
So, you’ve picked up your fresh sourdough starter from The Blissful Bakehouse—welcome to the world of wild yeast! Caring for your starter doesn’t have to be complicated, and with just a little love (and flour), you’ll be baking beautiful bread in no time.
🫙 Storing Your Starter
Your sourdough starter should be kept in a clean glass jar or container with a loose-fitting lid. You don’t want to seal it airtight—your wild yeast needs to breathe! A mason jar with the lid resting on top, a cloth cover with a rubber band, or a plastic lid that’s not fully closed works great. This helps keep unwanted dust or bugs out while still allowing airflow.
🧑🍳 Feeding Your Starter
Feeding your starter is like feeding a pet—consistency is key!
Two easy options:
1. Room Temperature (Daily Feedings):
If you’re baking often or want a super active starter, keep it on your counter.
-
Feed it once a day using a 1:1:1 ratio:
-
1 part starter
-
1 part flour
-
1 part water
(For example: 30g starter, 30g flour, 30g water)
-
2. Refrigerated (Weekly Feedings):
Not baking every day? You can store your starter in the fridge and feed it just once a week using the same 1:1:1 ratio.
Let it sit out for an hour or two after feeding before placing it back in the fridge.
💡 Kathy’s Tip:
I personally recommend keeping your starter out of the fridge, especially when you’re just getting started. Room temperature helps the wild yeast activate faster, making your starter strong and bubbly—perfect for a good rise and full flavor.
