Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a live starter and a dehydrated starter?

Our live starter is the active culture we keep and feed daily right here at The Blissful Bakehouse — it's ready to bake with immediately. Because it's perishable and needs refrigeration, we only offer live starter for local pickup. Dehydrated starter is that same culture, gently dried to pause its activity so it can be safely shipped anywhere and stored at room temperature for months. Once you rehydrate it, you're working with the same organic culture — just woken back up.

Is this starter authentic? Is it really active?

Yes. This is the exact starter we bake with at The Blissful Bakehouse, dehydrated from our own maintained culture. The dehydration process puts the wild yeast and beneficial bacteria into a dormant state — they're not dead, just resting. Reviving it typically takes 3–5 days of regular feedings before the culture is strong and predictable enough for baking.

What does healthy activity look like during revival?

A healthy starter in revival will show these signs, usually progressing over several days:

  • Bubbles forming on the surface and sides of the jar — often the first sign of life, appearing within the first day or two.
  • A rise and fall pattern — the starter climbs after feeding, peaks (often doubling), then falls back down. This cycle is what you're training.
  • A tangy, yeasty smell — slightly sour or beer-like is normal and a good sign. An overpowering acetone or nail-polish smell usually means it needs feeding sooner.
  • Consistent doubling within 4–8 hours of feeding — at this point, your starter is ready to bake with.

My starter shows little or no activity after a few days. What should I do?

Don't panic — slow starters are common, especially in cooler environments. Try these steps before giving up:

  • Check the temperature. Wild yeast is most active between 70°F and 80°F (21°C–27°C). A cool kitchen can slow things significantly. Try placing the jar on top of the refrigerator or near a warm spot.
  • Keep feeding consistently. Feed with equal parts flour and water (by weight) once or twice a day, even if you see little activity. Discard half before each feeding to avoid dilution buildup.
  • Use the right flour. Whole wheat or rye flour can speed things up during early revival — they contain more natural wild yeast than white flour alone.
  • Be patient with timing. Some starters take up to 7 days to show strong, consistent activity. Slow progress is still progress.

When should I keep feeding versus contact the bakery?

Keep feeding if your starter is showing any signs of life — bubbles, mild rise, or a developing smell — even if activity is slow. This is normal during the first week. Reach out to us if:

  • You've completed 7 or more days of twice-daily feedings with zero bubbles or movement.
  • You're unsure whether what you're seeing is healthy and want a second opinion.

We're happy to help troubleshoot. You can reach us through our contact page and we'll do our best to get your starter thriving.
